In 2015 and after five years of operation and spending close to 1.3 billion pounds, the British government radically change the operation of its Cancer Drug Fund (CDF) and the way citizens access drugs for cancer. What were the reasons for its change? Valuable lessons can be learned from the shortcomings of this type of catastrophic funds, such as the need of evidence-based decision making and systematic solutions that ensure that interventions and reimbursement of cancer care medications are appropriately prioritized, inclusive and transparent.
